I’m telling you all about the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why. From telling you the full story to discussing the controversy, we cover it all. Be warned, I try to tell you the whole plot as quickly as possible in case you have no desire to ever watch the series but want to know the tea. Each episode is like an hour long so bear with me as I explain the whole series in like 30 minutes. I’m sure I’m leaving out key stuff, please correct me in the comments.

I understand that people are outraged at the graphic suicide depicted in 13 Reasons Why and how that can be misguiding to sensitive teens. I think that is fair criticism 100% but it’s for sure not the only thing to criticize. I have seen some think pieces on the slut-shaming in 13 Reasons Why, but typically when I hear complaints it’s about the suicide. Yes, their depiction of suicide is very shocking but so is the constant sexual violation the main character faces the entire series. I worry that it’s easy too brush aside the conversations around rape culture and teen sex because of the gravity of the suicide in the series. It’s all important to discuss. I just wanted to make that point up front in writing because the rampant sexual assault is the part of the series that has stuck with me the most. What stuck with you?
